23 people rescued, others still missing as boat capsizes in Tana River

A private boat carrying a large number of people on Sunday, April 28 evening capsized at Kona Punda area while heading to Mororo, Tana River County.

The boat is said to be ferrying people at a fee across the flooded area from Madogo to Garissa Town when the incident occurred.

The Kenya Red Cross says that 23 people have been rescued and are currently receiving medical care at Madogo Hospital, while others are still missing.

Bangale Deputy County Commissioner Joseph Kipkorir says that search and rescue efforts — carried out by police and Kenya Red Cross personnel — are still underway.

Due to raging floods occasioned by the ongoing heavy rains, public transport vehicles are dropping off passengers at Madogo.

The passengers are then expected to part with KSh1,500 to travel by boat from Madogo to Garissa Town.
