Detectives handling investigations into the murder of prominent city lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu have made yet another breakthrough in a bid to uncover the masterminds behind the September 9, 2025 drive-by shooting that shocked the nation.
The sleuths on Friday, September 25 announced that they had recovered a motorcycle they believe was used to ferry the gunman to and from the scene of the fatal shooting along Magadi Road in Karen, Nairobi.
The recovery comes in the wake of the arrest of three suspects, including Nicholas Lemiso Naula, a boda boda rider suspected of transporting the gunman on the day of the attack.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Naula told detectives that he was riding motorcycle registration number KMGL 516L at the time of the shooting. Detectives immediately embarked on a trail to establish the motorcycle’s movements and trace its current whereabouts.
The trail led investigators through a succession of owners before the motorcycle was finally located and recovered. It was subsequently escorted to the Homicide Offices for further examination.
“When presented with the motorcycle, Naula positively identified it as the one he had used to ferry the suspected gunman during the fatal attack,” Naula told detectives, as reported by the DCI.
The latest recovery adds to another crucial piece in the whole investigations of Mbobu’s assassination, especially during a week that has seen the arrest of the suspected gunman and two boda boda riders, as well as the recovery of motorcycles allegedly used to transport the gunman and trail the victim.
“With every new piece of evidence, detectives are steadily reconstructing the chain of events surrounding Lawyer Mbobu’s murder,” the investigative agency remains upbeat. “The focus remains on establishing the full circumstances of the killing, identifying every person involved and bringing those suspected of responsibility to justice.”
Shocking twist
In a development straight out of a classic movie, detectives this week made a major breakthrough in the investigations after they identified and arrested Police Constable Julius Cheruiyot, who is suspected of being the gunman who fatally shot the lawyer.
Consequently, the sleuths on Thursday, September 24 recovered a Ceska pistol that had been issued to the suspect at the time of the incident. Ballistic examination, the DCI says, has since confirmed that the firearm was indeed used in the shooting that claimed the life of Lawyer Mbobu.
And in a shocking twist of events, the investigations have since established that Inspector Kenneth Sang, who is currently at large, allegedly coordinated the operation in liaison with Rose Mbithe.
What is even more shocking is that Mbithe is already in police custody in connection with the murder of Dr. Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, who was assassinated on July 29, 2026, after being gunned down inside an Uber along Mawensi Road in Upper Hill, Nairobi.
