DCI officer arrested in Nyeri for demanding Ksh10,000 bribe

Officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Wednesday April 10, 2024 arrested an officer from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Nyeri for allegedly demanding Ksh10,000 bribe from a resident who lost over Sh110,000 to fraudsters.

EACC noted in a statement that a resident reported the matter to the DCI officer, seeking assistance to recover the stolen money from Mpesa fraudsters.

“The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), through its Central Regional Office in Nyeri, on Wednesday morning arrested Luke Nyasangah, a DCI Officer based at Ngano Police Station, Nyandaraua County, for demanding Ksh10,000 bribe from a local resident who had lost Ksh115,000 in Mpesa to fraudsters, and needed police assistance to recover the funds.

“The suspect told the complainant that the bribe was mandatory to facilitate tracking of the fraudsters. He has been put in custody at Charagita Police Post pending further processing,” read part of the EACC statement.

The arrest of the DCI officer is part of the efforts by the EACC to recover stolen property in different parts of the country.

For instance on April 1, the High Court ordered Isiolo County officials to refund Ksh7,220,000 obtained through procurement fraud, after EACC filed a case seeking to have Isiolo County officials pay back public money.

EACC was following up on the matter to recover Ksh7,220,000 from Isiolo County Officials, including 2 Chief Officers and PA to the governor.

A similar case occurred on February 24, 2024 when EACC noted in a report recommending prosecution of suspects relating to the County Government of Taita Taveta, where the County Assembly leadership and MCAs defrauded the taxpayer by undertaking a bonding and merry-making trip to Zanzibar on public funds amounting to over Ksh7 million.

Some MCAs were overpaid while others who received allowances for the journey did not travel.
