The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has successfully opposed the release on bond of a Kenyan man wanted by authorities in the United Kingdom to face multiple serious criminal charges, including murder and fraud.
According to a statement shared by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) on Tuesday, June 30, the prosecution convinced the court that releasing the suspect posed a significant flight risk that could jeopardize the ongoing extradition process.
The suspect, identified as Brian Kiprop Kiplagat, is being sought by UK authorities to answer charges of murder, manslaughter, perverting the course of justice, and fraud by false representation.
In her ruling, Hon. Mugo agreed with the prosecution’s arguments, finding that there were compelling reasons to deny the suspect bail.
“The court was satisfied that the risk of the suspect absconding was genuine,” Hon. Mugo ruled, adding that “the least restrictive and most appropriate measure was to decline bail and instead ensure that the extradition proceedings are heard and determined expeditiously.”
The ruling follows an application by the DPP seeking the endorsement of two warrants of arrest issued by the Westminster Court in the United Kingdom.
The endorsement formally clears the way for extradition proceedings to commence in line with Kenyan law and the country’s international legal cooperation obligations.
The prosecution team was led by Senior Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Vincent Monda, assisted by prosecutors Victor Owiti, Magdalene Nduati, Brenda Nandwa, and Fatma Shabaan.
Following the court’s decision, Kiplagat was remanded at the Industrial Area Remand Prison pending the hearing and determination of the extradition proceedings.
The case will be mentioned on August 4, 2026, when the court is expected to issue further directions on the extradition process.
If extradited, Kiplagat will stand trial before UK courts to answer the charges outlined in the warrants issued by the Westminster Court.
The case highlights the continued cooperation between Kenya and the United Kingdom in handling cross-border criminal matters through established extradition procedures.
