Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has been removed from the Senate Energy Committee following changes to standing committees approved by the Senate on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, in the beginning of the afternoon session.
The changes were announced by Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot through a motion on the reconstitution of standing committees and were later adopted after Speaker Amason Kingi put the question before senators.
“Mr Speaker, I rise to give notice of the following motion, which is a reconstitution of standing committees that, notwithstanding the resolution of the Senate made on February 12, 2025, is the approval of senators to serve in various committees,” Cheruiyot told the House.
Under the changes, Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang’ takes over Sifuna’s slot in the Energy Committee.
“Committee on Energy: Sen. Abdul Mohamed Haji, MP to replace Sen. Beatrice Akinyi Ogolla, MP; Sen. Moses Kajwang’, MP to replace Sen. Edwin Sifuna, MP,” he stated.
The reshuffle also saw nominated Senator Agnes Kavindu moved to the Information, Communication and Technology Committee in place of Beatrice Ogolla, while Ogolla was transferred to the Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Committee to replace Kajwang’.
Sifuna’s removal from the Energy Committee comes amid ongoing political friction within ODM. Earlier, the party’s National Executive Committee voted to remove him as Secretary General, citing indiscipline and his opposition to ODM’s cooperation with President William Ruto’s broad-based government.
Despite losing his seat in the Energy Committee, Sifuna retains his membership in the Senate County Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
The Energy Committee continues to be chaired by Siaya Senator Dr Oburu Odinga.
