Eight suspects charged over multi-million Nairobi-Nakuru highway robberies targeting courier firms

Eight suspects linked to a suspected criminal syndicate behind a series of highway robberies targeting courier companies have been arrested following a coordinated operation by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

In a statement issued on Friday, June 26, the DCI said the operation was conducted by officers from the Operation Action Team (OAT), the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB), and the DCI Nakuru Regional Office.

According to investigators, the gang is believed to have orchestrated several robberies along the Nairobiโ€“Nakuru highway, with incidents reported in Mai Mahiu, Kipkelion, Londiani and Nakuru.

The attacks allegedly led to the loss of goods worth millions of shillings belonging to courier companies transporting cargo across the country.

The DCI revealed that investigations uncovered “a sophisticated and organised gang of approximately fifteen members, linked forensically to over five incidents.”

Detectives further disclosed that the suspects allegedly posed as DCI and Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officers during the robberies.

“The gang’s modus operandi is stopping vehicles transporting goods under the guise of law enforcement, escorting them to secluded areas, unlawfully detaining them, and then transferring the cargo to another waiting vehicle before vanishing without a trace,” the DCI said.

Police recovered two police radio communication devices during the operation, while two silver Subaru Outback vehicles allegedly used in the crimes were also linked to the suspects.

Six of the suspects were arraigned before the Nakuru Law Courts, where they pleaded not guilty to the charges. They were each granted a bond of KSh250,000, with the case scheduled for mention on July 13, 2026.

The remaining two suspects remain in police custody and are expected to be arraigned on Monday, June 29.

The DCI said investigations are ongoing as detectives pursue other members of the syndicate who remain at large.
