Kenyan comedian-turned-activist Eric Omondi has been slapped with a jail term of one month.
Omondi broke the news on his social media pages, saying he was ready to serve his time.
“So today the courts have sentenced me and these young guys to one month in prison. We have been sentenced for fighting the high cost of living.
The comedian alluded that the judiciary might have made the move to stop him from leading protests over increased pump prices.
“It is also weird that the government increased fuel prices yesterday these weirdly coincided with our court date which is for the same fight we have been sentenced to,” he added.
New Hike in Fuel Prices
Energy and Petroleum Authority (EPRA) released new fuel prices on Thursday evening which take effect until October 15.
In Nairobi, the price of Super Petrol increased by KSh16.96 to retail at KSh211.64, while that of diesel rose by KSh21.32 to sell at KSh200.99.
The price of kerosene increased by KSh33.13 to sell at KSh202.61.
Cabinet Secretary for Trade and Industrialisation Moses Kuria blamed the recent increase in fuel prices on worldwide crude prices.
“Global crude prices are on an upward trajectory,” wrote Kuria on his X (formerly Twitter) account.
He advised Kenyans to plan for tough times ahead further revealing that the prices will increase by KSh 10 monthly till February.
“For planning purposes expect prices to go up by KSh 10 every month till February.”
Eric Omondi Arrested
Eric Omondi was arrested in February this year for leading protests outside Parliament buildings in Nairobi. He demanded that Members of Parliament address the concerns raised by Kenyans.
Narok Senator Ledama Olekina praised the comedian for making such a bold move.
“Welcome aboard Eric Omondi…more people will join our movement of change … cost of living is too high,” he added.
Eric Omondi has been holding online fundraisers to assist Kenyans facing diverse issues including; hunger, lack of fees, medical care, and so on.
