FA cup semi-final: Why Amad Diallo will be available for Man United despite red card

Manchester United’s forward Amad Diallo could still be available for selection in the FA cup semi-final against Coventry despite having a red card for taking off his shirt during United’s 4-3 win against Liverpool.

Diallo’s last-minute heroics helped United cruise to the Semis and it would be unfortunate if the man who helped this happened not to get a chance to participate.

The Ivorian winger was shown a yellow card for delaying the restart of play. He removed his shirt in the celebrations, leaving referee John Brooks with no choice but to send him off.

The 21-year old however gave a hilarious response to the red after the match.

“I forgot the first yellow. I’m disappointed about the red card, but winning was the most important thing. Liverpool is a big club [to score against],” Diallo stated.

The two yellow cards carry a one-game suspension, and English rules allow the suspension to be served in another domestic competition, as captured on the Premier League’s website. Diallo will, therefore, be suspended for Manchester United’s next domestic game, which will be a visit to London to face Brentford after the international break.

However, the rules get confusing when a player picks up five yellow cards in the Premier League. The rules dictate that this will carry a one-match ban, but it has to be served in the Premier League.

This explains why Nicolas Jackson missed Chelsea’s EPL game against Fulham but was available for selection against Brighton in the Carabao Cup.

A direct red card in the Premier League will see a player miss the next domestic match, irrespective of the competition.

Newcastle United’s goalkeeper Nick Pope missed the Carabao Cup final last season after picking up a red card against Liverpool.
