Family of 15 left homeless in Kisumu after land dispute

A family of fifteen in Gwanda village, Kasule area of Kisumu County, has been left without shelter after their homes were demolished in what is believed to be a long standing land dispute.

The incident has sparked outrage among residents and prompted investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

According to reports, the demolition took place on Monday when a group of unidentified individuals stormed the compound of Morice Odhiambo and his wife, Lorna Odhiambo, before tearing down their houses.

The family, which includes children and elderly members, now faces an uncertain future as they struggle to find alternative shelter. Speaking to Tv47, Morice Odhiambo expressed deep concern over the safety of his family. “We were attacked without warning, and our homes were destroyed. My children are scared, and we have nowhere to go.

We are appealing for help to rebuild our lives,” he said. His wife, Lorna, echoed the same fears, noting that the family has been left vulnerable. “This is not just about losing property; it is about losing dignity and security. We need protection and support to overcome this crisis,” she added.

Residents of Gwanda village condemned the incident, accusing the attackers of acting with impunity.

They called on the police to take swift action against those responsible. Community leaders emphasized that such acts of violence and intimidation undermine peace and coexistence in the area. Local authorities confirmed that the matter has been reported to the police. Officers from the DCI based at Kasagam Police Station stated that investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the suspects. They assured the public that justice will be pursued and that those found culpable will face the law.

The incident highlights the growing challenge of land disputes in Kisumu County, where families often find themselves caught in conflicts that escalate into violence.

For the Odhiambo family, the immediate concern remains finding shelter and ensuring the safety of their loved ones. As investigations continue, residents are urging the government to address land ownership issues more decisively to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
