FIDA calls for justice for baby Amanda: 5-year-old thrown off second floor at Jacaranda Gardens

The Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA-Kenya) on Friday, June 3, expressed regret over the tragic death of baby Amanda that occurred on Wednesday, June 11, at the Jacaranda Estate, Roysambu, in Nairobi.

“Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA-Kenya) is deeply saddened by the tragic and untimely death of baby Amanda that occurred at Jacaranda Residences, house number C4-205, after she was thrown from the balcony of the house by her drunk uncle. FIDA-Kenya sends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of baby Amanda. Unfortunately, baby Amanda met her death at the hands of an uncle who should have ordinarily been her protector,” part of the statement said.

FIDA-Kenya further added they have deployed an advocate to look into the incident, promising to ensure baby Amanda and the family get justice.

“In light of the above, FIDA-Kenya is unwavering in its commitment to justice. We have deployed an advocate to pursue this matter and follow up with the relevant authorities to ensure that baby Amanda and her family receive timely justice. We are committed to protecting the rights of all women, girls, and children. More details to follow.”

Baby Amanda was reportedly killed by her uncle, who threw her off the balcony.

According to reports, the man returned home on Wednesday, June 11, night intoxicated and began causing a disturbance. Unfortunately, baby Amanda’s parents were not home, only the deceased and the nanny.

“The uncle overpowered the housegirl and snatched baby Amanda from her. The house girl, sensing danger, ran out of the apartment screaming for help. Unfortunately, in a tragic turn of events, the uncle threw baby Amanda from the balcony,” narrated Lilian Gichuru, the property manager.

Responding to the screams, security guards and neighbours subdued the uncle and called police officers from Kiamumbi Police Station.

The neighbours then rushed baby Amanda to Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment, where she unfortunately died.

So far, a statement from the house girl has been recorded at Kiamumbi Police Station, while the case is being referred to Kahawa West Police Station.
