Funeral turns tragic as mourners kill Police Officer

A Ugandan police officer was killed by a mob while on duty at a funeral in Ibanda District on April 6, The Uganda Police Force released a statement on April 7, detailing the incident and subsequent actions. Police Constable (PC) Chemonges Suleiman, attached to Bisheshe Police Station, was deployed to provide security at the funeral of Kahangire Lazarus, which took place in Kambogo Cell, Bisheshe Division, Ibanda District.

Kahangire, who had been accused of attempted murder, died while on remand at Nyabuhikye Government Prison, after being arrested for evading capture for his alleged crime.

Chemonges was attacked by a mob at the funeral grounds. The mob accused him of involvement in Kahangire’s arrest and subsequent detention. Despite firing warning shots to protect himself, the mob overwhelmed and killed him.

Following the incident, police recovered an SMG rifle with 16 rounds of ammunition from the scene. PC Chemonges’ body was transported to Ruhoko Health Centre mortuary for a postmortem examination.

The Uganda Police Force has arrested 29 suspects in connection with the murder and is continuing its search for additional perpetrators.

The Uganda Police Force has condemned the violent act and assured the public that all those involved in the crime will be held accountable. The incident highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement officers in maintaining order and security in volatile situations. The investigation is ongoing as authorities seek to bring those responsible to justice.
