Gor Mahia are one win away from reclaiming regional glory after defeating Sudan’s Al Hilal in a dramatic penalty shootout to secure a place in the final of the 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup in Kigali, Rwanda.
The Kenyan champions booked their spot in the title decider after a gripping semi-final ended 1-1 following extra time, before K’Ogalo prevailed in a tense shootout to keep their hopes of lifting the regional crown alive.
The victory capped another determined display from Gor Mahia, who have enjoyed an impressive campaign despite facing stiff opposition throughout the tournament.
Gor Mahia began their Kagame Cup journey in emphatic fashion with a commanding 5-0 victory over Rwanda’s APR FC before suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Uganda’s Vipers SC in their second Group A fixture.
They bounced back by edging Djibouti’s Garde Républicaine 1-0, a result that saw them finish top of the group on goal difference and advance to the last four.
Against Al Hilal, Gor Mahia started brightly, dominating possession and pressing high in search of an early breakthrough. Both teams created chances as the contest gradually opened up, although clear-cut opportunities remained limited in the opening stages.
The Kenyan side finally broke the deadlock in the 38th minute, only for Al Hilal to restore parity moments before halftime to send the teams into the break level at 1-1.
Neither side managed to find a winner during an entertaining second half despite several tactical substitutions and late attacking opportunities. Lesley Otieno came closest to sealing victory for Gor Mahia deep into stoppage time, but his effort drifted narrowly wide.
K’Ogalo were then forced to navigate extra time with ten men after Jackson Dwang was sent off late in regulation time. Despite the numerical disadvantage, they defended resolutely to force the match into penalties.
The shootout proved equally dramatic. After Daniel Sakari missed Gor Mahia’s opening penalty, both sides converted a string of spot-kicks before the contest moved into sudden death.
Goalkeeper Byrne Omondi confidently converted his penalty before Al Hilal’s Musa Hussein failed to score, handing Gor Mahia a memorable victory and a place in the tournament final, where they will now chase regional supremacy.
