Twenty-one (21) drivers have been arrested following an interagency night compliance check along the Kakamega Mumias road.
The operation observed several safety concerns such as driving under the influence of alcohol, driving without a valid driving license, driving with an expired Public Service Vehicle badge ,vehicles operating with cracked windscreens, worn out tires, expired inspection certificates and insurance certificates and use of unprescribed registration plates .
The arrests comes even as the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) heightens road safety campaigns across the country during this festive season. Dubbed ‘Msimu Bila Ajali, Usalama Barabarani’, the campaign targets the risky driving behaviours and preventing deadly crashes as festive season approaches.
The campaign involves sensitasation of drivers and passengers as well as day and night safety checks along major transport corridors.
NTSA mentioned that the night checks have been prioritized because evening and late hours are the most deadliest periods on the roads.
”By allocating resources during this high risk we can maximize efforts to disrupt the critical risk factors that cause preventable road traffic crashes,” the authority said.
As part of the enforcement measures, motorists were asked to slow down when approaching the various checkpoints and cooperate with police officers.
NTSA also advised motorists travelling at night to reduce speed, maintain safe following distances and remain alert citing that darkness reduces visibility.
