Governor Kawira Mwangaza joins President Ruto’s UDA party

Meru County governor Kawira Mwangaza on Wednesday April 3, 2023 officially joined President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.

Governor Mwangaza was received by UDA secretary general Cleophas Malala and chairperson, who is also Embu governor Cecily Mbarire at the party headquarters in Nairobi.

Mwangaza won the Meru governor’s seat as an independent candidate in the 2022 general elections.

Speaking during a press briefing at the UDA headquarters, Mwangaza disclosed that she will defend her governor seat on the UDA ticket in 2027.

“People have been asking me for direction come 2027. I am proud to now show Meru people the way, the party is UDA,” she said.

The Meru governor further appealed to MCAs from Meru to work with her in uplifting the lives of residents.

“As a mother, I plead with MCAs, let’s work together. To all MPs, I know most of you are in UDA, let us work together,” she added.

Kawira Mwangaza was elected Meru woman representative in 2017 as an independent candidate, before contesting in the 2022 gubernatorial elections as an independent candidate.

She joined UDA a day after Silas Jakakimba, a former aide to Raila Odinga, on Tuesday April 2, formally decamped from ODM to the ruling party.

Meanwhile, UDA has announced a schedule of the four-phased grassroots elections running from April to August 2024.
