A sombre mood has engulfed Moi Girls Vokoli after a Form Four student collapsed and died under unclear circumstances, prompting the school’s administration to temporarily send learners home to recover from the emotional trauma.
The tragic incident occurred on the evening of Tuesday, June 16, shortly after students had completed their evening prep studies.
According to a statement issued by Chief Principal and Board of Management Secretary Hellen Mabese Luhangala, the student collapsed while fetching water near the school’s Old Administration block.
She was immediately rushed to Sabatia Health Centre for medical attention but was pronounced dead after a brief period of observation by healthcare personnel.
The deceased was a Form Four candidate and a total orphan, according to the school administration.
School officials confirmed that the student’s guardian and family members had been informed of the tragedy and were working closely with the institution as arrangements continue.
The cause of death has not yet been established.
The student’s body was moved to the mortuary at Vihiga Teaching and Referral Hospital, where it is being preserved pending a post-mortem examination that is expected to determine the cause of death.
The incident has deepened grief at the school, coming barely two months after another student, a Form Three learner, died under separate circumstances earlier this year.
The back-to-back tragedies have left students and staff emotionally shaken, with school administrators citing widespread psychological distress among learners.
As a result, the school management resolved to temporarily close the institution and allow students to return home as they receive support and recover from the trauma caused by the losses.
Education officials and investigators are expected to await the outcome of the post-mortem examination before providing further details on the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
The latest incident has sparked concern among parents and the wider community, with many calling for a thorough investigation into the cause of the student’s sudden collapse and death.
