Homa Bay MP calls for return of corporal punishment in schools

‎Homa Bay Woman Representative Joyce Osogo has called on the Ministry of Education to consider reintroducing corporal punishment in schools as a way of addressing the increasing cases of school unrest and arson across the country.

‎‎Speaking during a mentorship programme at Migingo Comprehensive School in Karachuonyo Constituency, Osogo said the move is aimed at restoring discipline among learners and should not be viewed as a means of frustrating children.

‎The legislator argued that corporal punishment would help instill discipline and curb destructive behaviour that has recently been witnessed in some learning institutions.

‎She urged stakeholders, including child rights organizations, human rights groups and parents, to support the proposal, saying collective efforts are needed to address the growing cases of indiscipline in schools.

‎Osogo noted that Members of Parliament are yet to table a bill on the matter in the National Assembly and appealed to parents to support the initiative during the public participation process once it is presented.
