Kenyan students create cybersecurity tool to help SMEs combat rising cyber threats

Three students from Zetech University have developed an innovative cybersecurity platform aimed at helping small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) protect themselves from cyber threats without the need for expensive in-house IT security teams.

The trio software engineering undergraduate student Isaac Muendo, alongside Josephat Onkoba and Elijah Kithinji developed a Security Operations Platform for cyber risk quantification and management dubbed Kqimble.

Their innovation has earned them an opportunity to represent Kenya at the upcoming Innovation World Cup Cyber/AI Expo to be held at BMW Welt in Munich, Germany, after being selected to compete in the global cyber and artificial intelligence innovation challenge.

According to Muendo, who is the lead developer the platform was developed to simplify cybersecurity operations, especially for SMEs and managed service providers?

Muendo noted that Kqimble as it’s named could significantly transform Kenya’s cybersecurity landscape, especially given that many of the existing security solutions are imported from software vendors in Europe and the United States.

He added that having a local solution means they can provide data residency, ensuring organizations do not have to worry too much about their data being handled by foreign parties who may not necessarily comply with Kenyan laws and regulations.

Zetech University Vice Chancellor Prof. Njenga Munene said the institution has strengthened its Intellectual Property (IP) framework to protect innovations developed by students and researchers.
