Kitui County is playing host to one of the biggest student sporting events in the country after the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) National Athletics and Ball Games officially got underway today.

The week-long championship has brought together more than 2,600 students from KMTC campuses across Kenya to compete in a wide range of athletics and ball games, turning the county into a vibrant hub of sporting excellence.

Speaking during the official opening ceremony, KMTC Chief Executive Officer Dr Kelly Oluoch said the annual games are more than just a competition.

He noted that they provide students with an opportunity to showcase their talents while promoting physical fitness, teamwork, discipline, resilience, and leadership—qualities that are essential in shaping competent and compassionate healthcare professionals.

Dr Oluoch added that the institution remains committed to nurturing well-rounded graduates by supporting both academic excellence and extracurricular activities.

Kitui County Executive Committee Member for Health Ruth Koki welcomed the teams to the county and assured participants of a warm stay throughout the tournament. She reaffirmed the county government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that empower young people through sports and talent development.

The championships are expected to run throughout the week, with teams battling for top honours across multiple sporting disciplines.

Beyond the competition, the event is also fostering national unity, friendship, and sportsmanship among students drawn from different regions of the country.

All eyes will now be on Kitui as the country’s future healthcare professionals compete for glory on the field while building lifelong connections off it.
