KRU cancels the Lionesses Rugby Super Series match

The Kenya Rugby Union KRU has or the second time cancelled the much anticipated Rugby Super Series match pitting Eagles and Jaguars.

According to the Rugby governing body, the World Rugby 10-day return-to-play protocol would expire on Thursday, May 23, leaving just one training day before the scheduled match.

The match was supposed to bring together players from Women National teams and was to be the first of the competition but failed to kick off last weekend.

In a recent communication, the Union noted that the final match was also cancelled due to concerns about player availability, welfare, and safety.

“Following consultations between the Rugby Super Series Organizing Committee, Kenya Lionesses Management, and the Kenya Rugby Union, it has been decided to cancel the Women’s Match between the Eagles and the Jaguars, originally scheduled for 12:00 PM on Saturday, 25 May 2024.” Part of the Statement from KRU read.

Factors that contributed to the decision to cancel the match include World Rugby 10-day return to play protocol.

“Player Welfare & Safety: World Rugby’s 10-day return-to-play protocol, which ensures player safety, will expire on Thursday, 23 May. This leaves just one training day before the scheduled match.“

Player Availability: Some players participated in the HSBC 7s Challenger Series in Poland on 18-19 May and are unavailable due to the same player welfare and safety protocols. As a result, it is not possible to field two elite sides capable of playing a competitive match that aligns with the aims of the RSS 2024. We thank our fans and partners for their understanding and continued support,” the Union added.

Meanwhile, the men’s matches will proceed as planned.

Menengai Cream Cheetahs will face the KCB Bank Lions, while Faiba Mobile Rhinos will tackle Kabras Sugar Buffaloes.

The Cheetahs will be looking to bounce back after suffering a 27-23 defeat to the Rhinos at the ASK Kakamega Showground last weekend, relinquishing their top spot on the log. The Rhinos, on the other hand, will be keen to secure their second win of the series.
