The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has launched investigations into a video circulating on social media that allegedly shows the destruction of Giant Lobelias (Lobelia telekii), a rare alpine plant species found in Kenya’s high-altitude ecosystems.
In a statement shared on its official X account, KWS said it had taken note of the footage and appreciated public concern over the matter.
“KWS has noted with concern a video circulating on social media allegedly showing the destruction of Giant Lobelias (Lobelia telekii), a unique alpine plant species found in Kenya’s high-altitude mountain ecosystems,” the agency stated.
The wildlife agency confirmed that investigations are underway to verify the authenticity of the video and establish where the incident may have occurred.
“Investigations are currently underway to verify the authenticity of the footage, determine where the incident occurred, and establish the circumstances surrounding it, including the individuals involved,” KWS said, adding that legal action will follow if the claims are confirmed.
KWS also highlighted the ecological importance of the Giant Lobelia, noting that the plant is a key feature of Kenya’s afro-alpine environment found in areas such as Mount Kenya, the Aberdares, and Mount Elgon.
The service warned that any interference with protected species threatens fragile ecosystems and Kenya’s biodiversity.
“KWS strongly cautions against the destruction or unlawful interference with protected wildlife, plants, and sensitive ecosystems, as such actions threaten Kenya’s natural heritage and ongoing conservation efforts,” the statement read.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the country’s biodiversity and promised to issue further updates once investigations are concluded.
