Malindi: Drug trafficker escapes, leaving behind 4 sacks of bhang worth Ksh2.5M

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have launched a manhunt after a suspected drug dealer escaped, leaving behind 4 sacks of bhang worth Ksh2.5 million in Midodoni village, Malindi Sub County.

In a statement on Monday August 19, 2024, the DCI stated that detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit stationed at Malindi Police Station are pursuing Morris Ware, a drug trafficker who managed to evade capture.

“Following reports from members of the public about the suspect’s engagement in illegal dealings, officers launched a raid at his store in Midodoni village.

“However, the suspect got away after spotting the officers leaving his store unattended,” read part of the DCI statement.

In the store, the officers uncovered 86 kilogrammes of bhang stashed in four sacks, with an estimated street value of Ksh2.5 million.

The recovered narcotics were taken to Malindi Police Station for safe custody, to be used as exhibits in court, as the search for the elusive trafficker continues.

“The DCI urges members of the Public to volunteer information on suspicious characters or activities to ensure a safe and secure drug-free environment for all citizens,” DCI explained in a statement.

The incident comes three days after two suspects were arrested with bhang worth Ksh13 million in Mariakani, Mombasa County.

The two were arrested after members of the public gave a tip off to the police who later organized a raid at the Mariakani weighbridge.

Crispin Oduor Owino and his co-driver Caleb Otieno Agolo were arrested with 16 sacks of bhang and two hundred large sticks of Cannabis Sativa.

The suspects and the seized narcotics were escorted to the Moi International Airport Police Station for further investigation.

Meanwhile, the recovered substances were analyzed by the government chemist and confirmed to be bhang weighing 456 kilograms, valued at Ksh13,680,000.
