Mixed signals as Sifuna and Orengo differ on Uhuru’s involvement in Linda Mwananchi

A new twist has emerged within the “Linda Mwananchi” ODM camp, exposing what appears to be a growing crack in messaging among its key leaders.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has in recent days, openly acknowledged and even defended former President Uhuru Kenyatta, praising his past political support while dismissing claims that he is funding the movement.

However, Siaya Governor James Orengo has now taken a different stance, declaring that Uhuru will not be allowed to join their upcoming Linda Mwananchi Central Kenya rallies.

Sifuna, while addressing speculation around the movement’s financing, reiterated that “Linda Mwananchi” is fully self-funded.

He explained that ordinary Kenyans contribute voluntarily through a paybill, sometimes sending as little as 10 shillings. “ordinary Kenyans voluntarily send money sometimes as little as 10 shillings,” he said.

In addition, he said Members of Parliament within the movement have agreed to contribute KSh100,000 each during meetings, generating a cumulative KSh1.5 million to facilitate logistics.

“Each of us agreed that when we hold a meeting, everyone contributes KSh100,000,” Sifuna said.

At the same time, he has consistently defended Uhuru’s legacy within their political circle, stating, “Heshima tulionayo na uhuru imetokana na kazi aliyofanya kumsaidia baba Raila.”

His remarks reflect a continued alignment, rooted in the former president’s support for Raila Odinga during previous elections.

Furthermore, Sifuna appeared to challenge the ongoing accusations directly.

“He might as well bring the money to Linda Mwananchi because he is already being accused of funding us,” he said, in what many interpreted as a sarcastic but pointed response to critics.

However, Orengo’s latest declaration signals a different political calculation.

“We cannot allow former president Uhuru Kenyatta in our upcoming Linda Mwananchi Central tour,” he stated, drawing a clear line on Uhuru’s involvement at least in that region.

All these  raises questions about internal cohesion within the movement. While Sifuna’s tone suggests openness even appreciation towards Uhuru, Orengo’s position points to caution, or possibly strategy, particularly in Central Kenya where political dynamics remain sensitive.
