Morocco edge Netherlands on penalties to book historic World Cup quarter-final spot

African champions Morocco continued their remarkable 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign after defeating the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties following a hard-fought 1-1 draw after extra time to secure a place in the quarter-finals.

The Atlas Lions once again showcased their resilience and composure under pressure, recovering from a goal down before holding their nerve in a dramatic shootout at the Estadio Monterrey.

With a place in the last eight at stake, both sides approached the contest cautiously, producing a tightly contested first half with few clear-cut opportunities.

Morocco looked the more threatening of the two teams, with Achraf Hakimi forcing Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen into an early save before Neil El Aynaoui also tested the Brighton shot-stopper.

The Netherlands struggled to create meaningful openings as Morocco’s disciplined defensive shape frustrated Ronald Koeman’s side throughout the opening 45 minutes.

The Atlas Lions returned after the break with greater attacking intent.

Hakimi came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock when his powerful effort crashed against the crossbar, while Verbruggen produced another outstanding save to deny Soufiane Rahimi from close range as Morocco piled on the pressure.

Despite Morocco’s dominance, it was the Netherlands who struck first.

In the 71st minute, Crysencio Summerville delivered a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Cody Gakpo, who calmly slotted a low finish beyond the Moroccan goalkeeper to hand the Dutch a crucial lead.

Facing elimination, Morocco refused to panic and continued searching for an equaliser.

Their persistence paid off late in normal time when Issa Diop rose highest to head home from a set-piece, sending the travelling Moroccan supporters into wild celebrations and forcing the tie into extra time.

Neither side managed to find the decisive goal during the additional 30 minutes despite Morocco continuing to ask most of the attacking questions.

Rahimi was once again denied brilliantly by Verbruggen as the Dutch goalkeeper kept his side alive heading into a penalty shootout.

The drama intensified from the spot.

Neil El Aynaoui missed Morocco’s opening penalty, while Justin Kluivert and Quinten Timber both failed to convert for the Netherlands. Achraf Hakimi then struck the post to hand the Dutch renewed hope, but Morocco’s composure ultimately proved decisive.

Substitute Ismael Saibari stepped forward to convert the winning penalty, sealing a 3-2 shootout victory and sparking jubilant celebrations among the Moroccan players and supporters.

The victory ended the Netherlands’ 11-match unbeaten run in competitive fixtures and underlined Morocco’s credentials as genuine contenders at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Having once again eliminated one of Europe’s football heavyweights, the Atlas Lions continue to write another memorable chapter in their football history. With confidence soaring and continental pride at stake, Morocco now march into the quarter-finals dreaming of becoming the first African nation to lift the FIFA World Cup trophy.
