Mount Kenya University ranks among top 5 Kenyan Universities in 2026 THE Impact Rankings

Mount Kenya University (MKU) has strengthened its standing among Kenya’s top institutions of higher learning after an impressive showing in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, released in mid-June 2026.

Unlike conventional rankings that focus mainly on teaching and research output, the THE Impact Rankings measure how universities contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), looking at their real influence on issues such as health, education, equality, and innovation.

Out of more than 2,500 universities assessed across 130 countries in this year’s cycle, MKU earned recognition for its work towards several SDGs, including Good Health and Well-Being, Quality Education, Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, Reduced Inequalities, and Partnerships for the Goals.

This performance puts MKU among the top five universities in Kenya in the rankings, placing it alongside established public universities such as the University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University, and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

The achievement highlights how private universities are increasingly competing for ground in a sector that has long been dominated by public institutions.

Through innovation, community engagement, and strategic partnerships, MKU’s progress points to a more diverse and competitive higher education landscape in Kenya.

Much of MKU’s success can be traced to its focus on community-based initiatives and practical research.

Mount Kenya University, the latest THE Impact Rankings represent more than just recognition, they signal a trajectory of growth and global relevance.

The university has built a reputation for running free medical camps and health awareness drives, backing community-led research projects, widening access to education in underserved regions, and championing social inclusion through targeted programmes.

Globally, MKU also holds a notable position as the United Nations Academic Impact Hub Chair for SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) for the 2025-2030 period, cementing its role as a leader in innovation and sustainable development on the world stage.

University leadership credits the achievement to a long-standing strategy of blending academic excellence with social responsibility.

Ongoing investment in research, digital transformation, and international collaboration has helped the institution extend its reach well beyond Kenya’s borders, supported further by its participation in international academic exchange programmes.

For Mount Kenya University, this latest ranking is more than just an accolade, it reflects a clear path of growth and rising global relevance, offering a strong case study in how universities can fuse education, research, and tangible impact to create real change.
