Ndonyo-Ngaria celebrates marathon hero Sabastian Sawe after historic world record run

In Ndonyo-Ngaria village, Chesumei Sub-county in Nandi County, celebrations are ongoing at the home of 32-year-old marathoner Sabastian Sawe, who has recently etched his name into history by breaking the world record in the 42-kilometre marathon.

Sawe stunned the athletics world on Sunday in England when he clocked an incredible time of 1:59:30, becoming one of the very few athletes to run the full marathon distance in under two hours.

His achievement has not only brought pride to his village but also placed Kenya firmly back at the center of global long-distance running dominance.

Back home, his parents—both former athletes—could not hide their joy as they reflected on their son’s journey. His mother, Emily Jepkering, recalled spotting his talent at a very young age.

“We noticed Sabastian’s unique speed when he was just four years old. He would run incredibly fast, sometimes even to avoid punishment, and we knew there was something special about him,” she said with a smile.

His father echoed her sentiments, describing Sawe as a disciplined and focused individual.

“Among all his siblings, Sabastian has always stood out as the most disciplined, obedient, and hardworking. He has stayed committed to his dream,” he noted.

Fellow athletes from the region also praised Sawe not just for his performance on the track, but for his character off it. One of his training partners shared.

“Sabastian is not only a champion but also a generous person. He supports upcoming athletes by providing training gear like running shoes and motivates us to believe that our time to shine will come.”

Another athlete added, “He has shown us that success is possible through dedication and humility.”

Residents of Ndonyo-Ngaria village have joined in celebrating their hero, with many calling on the government to formally recognize his achievement.

A local elder stated, “We are proud of Sabastian Sawe and what he has done for this country. The government should honor him by erecting a statue or naming a street after him so that future generations can remember his greatness.”

As the nation awaits his arrival later today from England, where he represented Kenya with distinction, anticipation continues to build.

Sawe’s triumph has inspired not only his community but also young athletes across the country. His journey from a small village in Nandi to the global stage stands as a powerful reminder that talent, discipline, and perseverance can propel one to extraordinary heights.
