ODM Party Leader Dr. Oburu Oginga has challenged former President Uhuru Kenyatta to explain his recent claim that the late Raila Odinga won the 2022 Presidential Election.

In a statement issued on Thursday, September 24, Oburu said Uhuru’s remarks had confirmed what ODM had maintained following the August 2022 presidential contest.

Uhuru made the comments on September 22 during a Jubilee Party meeting in Nairobi, where he said he remained convinced that Raila had won the election.

Oburu, however, questioned why the former President had chosen to revisit the matter four years after the election and after the available constitutional avenues had been exhausted.

“Why is this revelation important now, four years later, and not when the said electoral injustice occurred?” Oburu asked.

He also questioned Uhuru’s actions after the election, particularly the transfer of power to President William Ruto despite the former President now saying he believed Raila had won.

“If he was convinced that Raila Odinga had won, why did his government facilitate the transfer of the instruments of power to a person he believed had not won?” the ODM leader asked.

According to Oburu, ODM had made significant political concessions during its relationship with Uhuru, particularly following the 2018 Handshake.

He said the party had prioritised national unity and stability and did not demand Cabinet or administrative positions in Uhuru’s government despite its political strength.

He further said ODM made additional compromises ahead of the 2022 election, including giving up its pursuit of key elective positions such as the Nairobi gubernatorial seat in support of the wider coalition arrangement.

Oburu said those decisions were made “in good faith” and argued that Uhuru’s latest remarks had reopened a painful chapter for ODM and Raila’s supporters.

The ODM leader also questioned what Kenyans were expected to do with the information at this point.

“What exactly does President Kenyatta expect the Kenyan people to do with this information today?” he asked.

Uhuru’s comments have reignited debate over the 2022 presidential election, whose official results declared William Ruto the winner. The Supreme Court subsequently upheld the result.

Oburu said that having reopened the issue, Uhuru should provide Kenyans with a fuller account of what happened before, during and after the election.

“Having reopened this matter, President Kenyatta should tell the country the whole story,” he said.
