Heavy rains pounding various parts of the country have triggered deadly landslides and flooding, with the Central region among the hardest hit as families lose homes, property, and livelihoods.
The Ministry of Interior and National Administration confirmed in a statement on May 8, 2026, that Kangema and Mathioya in the Central region have recorded landslides that have claimed one life and caused widespread destruction.
The fatal incident occurred in Ngutu area, Gitugi Ward, where approximately 200 households were displaced and are being relocated to safer grounds as the area remains at risk.
Other parts of Gitugi Ward, including Karung’e, Kanjahi, and Kahwai, had already been hit by earlier landslides.
Kiru Ward has also suffered significant damage, with landslides affecting more than 200 people across Gaikime, Kiagima Kiambuthia, Kagioini, and Kora areas.
Among the structures destroyed was the Kamagogo Full Gospel Church, which was completely flattened.
In Kamacharia Ward, at least one family in Wahundura area was displaced, with land, houses, domestic animals, and household items among the property lost.
The Ministry is urging residents in affected and at-risk areas to remain vigilant and immediately report any signs of soil movement, ground cracks, or weakened structures to local administrators and disaster management teams.
