Over 90 people die as ferry sinks in Mozambique

More than 90 people died after a ferry sank off the north coast of Mozambique on April 7th 2024, the BBC has reported.

The boat was traveling from Lunga to Mozambique Island, off the coast of Nampula.

Five of the people were rescued from among the 130 people believed to have been on board.

Two of the five survivors are receiving treatment at a medical facility in the country.

Further reports indicated that most of the victims were fleeing their homes due to a cholera outbreak.

Nampula’s Secretary of State Jaime Neto said, “Because the boat was overcrowded and unsuited to carry passengers, it ended up sinking. Many children were among the victims.”

Videos posted on social media showed many lifeless bodies lying on the beach including those of children.

The ferry, which was a converted fish boat, was carrying around 130 people and ran into trouble as it tried to reach an Island off Nampula province.

Many areas of Mozambique are only accessible by boats, which are often overcrowded. The country has a poor road network and some areas are unreachable by land or air.

The report stated that the investigative team was working to find out causes of the boat disaster
