Police and KDF officers reconcile after Likoni Ferry public scuffle

Kenya Defence Force (KDF) and National Police Service (NPS) personnel, who were recorded engaging in a public scuffle last week, have finally reached a truce and squashed their beef.

The truce was reached at the Likoni ferry channel, the same place where the previous incident occurred over a week ago.

The meeting was attended by Kenya Navy Base Commander Lt. Col. John Mutabari, Likoni Deputy County Commissioner Mwangi Wambugu, Likoni OCPD Geofrey Ruheni, and KPA Manager of Security Services Tony Kibwana.

On Sunday, KDF said in a statement that the incident was highly regrettable.

“To establish the circumstances leading to the incident, Military Police and requisite investigation agencies are currently handling the matter. The incident is highly regrettable. As KDF personnel, we are beholden to the core value of professionalism,” the statement read in part.

In the video, more than four KDF soldiers, armed to the teeth and in military regalia, are seen roughing up police officers.

At one point, the soldiers physically assaulted one of the police officers by slapping and punching him in the face, while a concerned citizen is heard questioning, “What is wrong with them?”

Others were the Kenya Ferry Services operations manager and the entire Likoni Security and Intelligence Committee.

“We agreed on mutual respect, multi-agency cooperation and open communication channels to avoid a repeat of a similar incident,” said a senior officer who attended the meeting.
