Police condemns petrol attack on woman and assaults on traffic officers in Nairobi

The National Police Service (NPS) has condemned three violent incidents reported within Nairobi in the past 24 hours, including a petrol attack on a woman in Mwiki and assaults on traffic police officers in Embakasi and Lang’ata.

In a statement issued on May 17, 2026, the police said a woman from Mwiki in Kasarani Sub-county is fighting for her life at Kenyatta National Hospital after she was allegedly doused with petrol and set ablaze.

“The National Police Service strongly condemns three incidents reported within the past 24 hours in the Nairobi region,” the Police stated.

According to the statement from the police, preliminary investigations indicate the attack may have been linked to her political views, with the matter now under investigation by a specialised team from the DCI headquarters.

The service also confirmed that a motorist captured in a viral social media video assaulting a traffic officer on duty in Embakasi has been identified, with due process underway.

In a separate incident in Lang’ata, police said the crew of a Metro Shuttle bus allegedly attacked a traffic officer who was enforcing the law. The suspects were arrested and the bus impounded.

“NPS condemns all three incidents in the strongest possible terms. Political intolerance has no place in competitive politics, our democracy, or our laws. Furthermore, any attack, whether verbal, physical, or otherwise, against a police officer is an affront to the rule of law and undermines the integrity and dignity of the National Police Service. Such attacks are an assault on our collective freedom,” the statement read.

The police further warned that attacks against officers undermine the rule of law and vowed to take firm legal action against anyone who obstructs officers while carrying out their duties.

The service asked members of the public with information about the incidents to report to the nearest police station or call the toll-free numbers 999 and 911. It reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order across the country with professionalism and integrity.

“Anyone with further information regarding the incidents described is urged to report to the nearest police station, a law enforcement officer, or via our toll-free numbers (999, 911), or anonymously through #FichuaKwaDCI on 0800 722 203 or WhatsApp 0709 570 000,” Police said.
