At least 29 youths were arrested on Thursday morning during an ongoing security operation in Kitengela, Kajiado County, as police heightened surveillance amid concerns over planned demonstrations and possible public disorder.
The operation, led by Kajiado County Police Commander Alex Shikondi, saw security officers deployed across key areas of the town, resulting in a heavy police presence and reduced movement by residents.
According to Shikondi, those arrested are suspected of involvement in activities linked to planned protests and incidents that could threaten public order and security.
Among those apprehended was Aslam Longton, one of the Longton brothers who came into the national spotlight after reportedly disappearing for 30 days during the 2024 Gen Z protests before resurfacing.
The security operation disrupted normal business activities, with only a few shops and businesses remaining open throughout the morning. Traders expressed concern over declining customer traffic and financial losses as residents largely stayed away from the town centre.
Despite the heightened deployment of security personnel, some residents said they remained worried about their safety, citing fears of possible confrontations and unrest.
Meanwhile, activist Bob Njagi, who was arrested on Wednesday over allegations of incitement, is expected to be arraigned at the Kajiado Law Courts later in the day.
Authorities have not disclosed the specific offences facing the suspects arrested during the operation, but police say investigations are ongoing.
Kitengela has in recent years emerged as one of the hotspots for demonstrations, with some protests resulting in deaths, looting and destruction of property.
Security agencies have maintained that the current operation is aimed at preventing violence and protecting lives and property, while ensuring that law-abiding residents can continue with their daily activities without disruption.
The arrests come as the country marks the anniversary of the 2024 Gen Z protests, with security agencies remaining on high alert in several parts of the country.
