Police launch investigations after Gatundu South MP shoots 1 person dead in Thika

Police on Saturday May 18, 2024 launched investigation into an incident where Gatundu South member of parliament (MP) Gabriel Kagombe allegedly shot one person dead during a confrontation in Thika.

According to the police, the shooting incident occurred when supporters of Thika MP Alice Ng’ang’a and Kamenu ward MCA Peter Mburu faced off over construction of Kiganjo market within Kamenu Ward, with both leaders claiming credit for the project.

“The MCA’s group began pelting stones on MP Alice and her entourage. The MP Alice Ng’ang’a  Ng’ang’a group retreated as police were tackling the group with teargas. 

“During the melee one GG Kagombe- MP Gatundu South shot indiscriminately towards the MCA’s group.

“During the incident one David Nduati aged 26 years was fatally injured after being shot as the bullet exited on the chest while Anthony Kamau aged 46 years was shot and seriously injured on the left arm and bullet suspected to have lodged in the armpit and is admitted at Thika Level 5 Hospital, one cartridge of 9mm was collected from the scene, the ACC 1 Philomena Nzioki sustained injuries and been treated at Avenue Hospital,” read part of police report. 

During the incident that happened on Friday May 17, 2024 at about 6.30pm, Thika MP Alice Ng’ang’a was accompanied by National Assembly majority leader Kimani Ichungwah, Gabriel Kagombe- MP Gatundu South, Kururia -MP Gatundu North, Zack -MCA Mwiki, Madam Philomena Nzioki-ACC 1, Madam Priscila Wangombe-ACC Makongeni together with area chiefs, their assistants and other community leaders. 

The purpose of the meeting was to distribute food rations to the members of the public within Maree area-Kimuchu.  

Police reported that the event was was attended by about 2000 members of the public, at the Altar of Israel Church. 

The dignitaries after speeches proceeded to launch the earmarked land for market construction. 

“The MCA Kamenu Ward Peter Mburu was already on site with about 500 people who were already constructing stalls in the said land, the actual confrontation started when the MP Alice Nganga and her supporters began erecting a sign post indicating the market area where the MCA supporters were already doing preliminary structures,” police noted. 

The body was removed to General Kago Hospital Mortuary awaiting post mortem. 

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) visited the scene and launched investigations into the shooting incident.
