Former Nairobi Governor and National Economic Development Party (NEDP) leader Mike Sonko has paid tribute to Cecilia Wanjiku, the second confirmed victim of the tragic Utumishi Academy dormitory fire, as she was laid to rest in Olkalau, Nyandarua County.
Sonko said his team transported Cecilia’s body from PNN Mortuary in Gilgil to Chokereria, Olkalau, earlier on Saturday ahead of her burial ceremony.
According to Sonko, Cecilia had initially escaped the burning dormitory safely and without injury when the fire broke out. However, in an extraordinary act of bravery, she chose to return to the building in an attempt to rescue fellow students who remained trapped inside.
Tragically, she never emerged from the raging inferno.
To support the grieving family, Sonko said his team provided two buses, a mobile clinic bus staffed by 12 nurses, and a VIP glass hearse to ensure the young student’s final journey was conducted with dignity.
Mourners gathered in Chokereria to celebrate the life of the student whose courage has touched many Kenyans following the devastating school tragedy.
“As we mourn, let us remember that humanitarian work is a sacred responsibility. We do not play politics with people’s pain, suffering, or tragedies. Our focus remains on compassion, service, and standing with those in need during their darkest moments,” Sonko said.
The former governor described Cecilia as a heroine whose selfless actions reflected remarkable courage and concern for others, even in the face of grave danger.
Her death has deepened the sorrow surrounding the Utumishi Academy fire, which has left families, students and the wider community searching for answers as investigations into the incident continue.
Sonko extended his condolences to Cecilia’s family, friends, classmates and all those affected by the tragedy, praying that they find comfort during the difficult period.
“May the Lord grant Cecilia eternal rest and bring comfort to all those affected by this heartbreaking tragedy,” he said.
