Slot: Liverpool identifies Jurgen Klopp’s successor

Liverpool has begun talks with  Feyenoord manager Arne Slot to succeed Jurgen Klopp who is set to exit the Reds at the end of the 2023/24 season.

Arne Slot is Liverpool’s number one choice for the position, and they have started negotiations with Feyenoord CEO Dennis te Kloese.

After guiding Feyenoord to just a second Eredivisie title in 20 years last season, Slot was a target for Tottenham Hotspur last summer, but he turned the north Londoners’ advances down in favour of remaining at De Kuip.

Slot took over from Dick Advocaat at Feyenoord for the start of the 21/22 season with the club having finished fifth the previous campaign.

The 45-year-old then extended his contract with Feyenoord until 2026.

At the time he was being linked with Spurs, Slot said: “The next step will not be another club in Holland. If that is the next step, I’ve failed in the upcoming few years.

“A normal next step would be to go abroad and I’ve always said that the best league in the world is the Premier League.”

The attacking style of Slot, who is also thought to be interesting to Barcelona and Bayern Munich, and his ability to develop players are believed to appeal to Liverpool.

Klopp announced in January he would be leaving the club at the end of the season after nine years. Liverpool started the head coach search back in November with Fenway Sports Group’s CEO of football Michael Edwards and new sporting director Richard Hughes now leading the process.

Slot has no release clause and is under contract with Feyenoord until 2026.
