According to a recent research study by Neuroscience news reveals that heavy social media usage by individuals may cause delusional-based psychiatric disorders.

The study emphasizes on the importance of balancing between virtual engagement with real world interaction to maintain a health self-perception.

Researchers found that excessive use of social media platforms has been associated with psychiatrics conditions characterized by distorted thinking, such narcissism, body dysmorphic disorder and anorexia.

These platforms often promote unrealistic standards prompting individuals to develop distorted self-images largely due to a lack of real-life checks and balances, resulting to negative self-evaluation.

The immersive nature of online environments has further exceed this issue.

Excessive use of phone and screen among preteens is associated with higher risks of developing manic symptoms .

This includes inflated self-esteem rapid thoughts, which are characteristics of bipolar spectrum disorders thus highlights how digital overuse can negatively impact mental health.

Moreover, social media platforms often encourage users to present idealized versions of themselves, leading to continuous cycle of seeking validation through likes and comments.

The behavior can result inconstant self-evaluation and depression.

To mitigate these harmful psychological effects, its crucial to balance virtual interactions with meaningful in person’s relationships.

It can be done by engaging in offline activities and fostering real world connections hence provide necessary checks and balances to maintain a healthy self-perception.  

While social media itself isn’t damaging, the context and intensity of its use significantly influence mental health outcomes.

By prompting a balanced approach to digital engagement and encouraging offline connections individuals can protect their mental wellbeing in the digital age.
