South Korea howler gifts Mexico victory as World Cup co-hosts reach knockout phase

Mexico secured their place in the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as Group A winners after edging South Korea 1-0 in a tense encounter at a packed Estadio Akron in Guadalajara on Friday morning.

A second-half goal from Luis Romo and a stunning late double save by goalkeeper Raul Rangel proved decisive as El Tri claimed their second consecutive victory of the tournament and moved onto six points from two matches.

The result guarantees Javier Aguirre’s side top spot in Group A ahead of their final group-stage clash against Czechia.

Backed by a passionate crowd of 45,522 supporters, Mexico dominated possession for much of the contest but struggled to break down a disciplined South Korean side that remained compact and organized throughout the opening half.

South Korea’s Lee Kang-in became the first player booked after just five minutes following a heavy challenge on Romo, while Mexico enjoyed territorial control without creating many clear-cut opportunities.

The hosts came closest to opening the scoring in the 21st minute when Roberto Alvarado delivered a dangerous cross into the area. Julian Quinones rose highest to meet it, but goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu produced an excellent save to deny the powerful header.

South Korea, meanwhile, looked threatening on the counterattack, with Son Heung-min providing their main attacking outlet. However, neither side was able to find a breakthrough before halftime, prompting frustration from sections of the home crowd.

Mexico emerged from the break with greater urgency and found the breakthrough just five minutes into the second half thanks to a costly defensive mistake by the visitors.

Kim Seung-gyu rushed off his line in an attempt to collect a loose ball but collided with teammate Lee Kang-in, spilling possession directly into the path of Romo. The midfielder calmly slotted the ball into an empty net to hand Mexico a priceless lead and ignite celebrations around the stadium.

The goal transformed the contest, forcing South Korea to push forward in search of an equalizer.

Head coach Hong Myung-bo responded by introducing attacking reinforcements, including Hwang Hee-chan and Oh Hyeon-gyu, as the visitors increased the pressure during the closing stages.

Mexico, however, stood firm.

Edson Alvarez marshalled the defence with authority, while Johan Vazquez delivered a series of crucial interceptions and blocks to frustrate South Korea’s growing attacks.

The visitors nearly found a breakthrough in the 78th minute when Yang Hyun-jun sent a dangerous ball across the face of goal, but Oh Hyeon-gyu was unable to make contact.

South Korea’s best opportunity arrived three minutes from time in a dramatic sequence that ultimately defined the match.

Cho Gue-sung rose highest inside the penalty area and directed a powerful header towards goal, only for Rangel to produce a remarkable reflex save. The rebound fell kindly to Yang Hyun-jun, but the Mexican goalkeeper reacted instantly once again, diving across his goal to make an extraordinary second stop.

The spectacular double save preserved Mexico’s slender advantage and brought the home supporters to their feet.

Despite six minutes of added time and sustained late pressure from South Korea, Mexico held on comfortably. Lee Han-beom headed wide from a promising position before another vital intervention from Vazquez snuffed out the visitors’ final attacking threat.

At the final whistle, relief quickly turned into celebration for the co-hosts, who secured qualification for the knockout rounds with a game to spare.

While the performance may not rank among Mexico’s most memorable, Romo’s opportunistic finish and Rangel’s match-winning heroics ensured El Tri collected all three points and advanced as Group A winners.

For South Korea, the defeat leaves their qualification hopes hanging in the balance ahead of a decisive final group-stage encounter, where they will need a positive result to keep their World Cup journey alive.
