Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua took to his social media page on Friday, May 1, 2026, to send a blunt message to Kenyan workers, pointing out that while workers around the world were celebrating International Labour Day, Kenyan workers had absolutely nothing to celebrate.
The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) Party Leader said workers in Kenya are gathering today not in joy but in pain, standing at the crossroads of a mutilated payslip and a shrinking economy, overworked, overtaxed, underpaid, and disrespected.
“To the Kenyan worker, today I stand with you in struggle, recognition and solidarity,” he wrote.
He described the burden of heavy taxation and poor wages as having left millions of hardworking Kenyans with very little to show for their efforts at the end of every month.
Gachagua pointed to the 2027 General Election as the moment Kenyan workers could finally turn the tide and reclaim their dignity.
“We started a journey to liberate your payslip and give you dignity in the end. The cause is on and your future stands on trial on 10th August 2027,” he said.
He closed with the kind of honesty that has defined his public voice since leaving office, acknowledging what millions of workers were already feeling but few in power were willing to say out loud.
“I know there is nothing to celebrate today,” he said.
But the fight, he made clear, is far from over.
