Mombasa County Government disburses KSh 14 million to 155 local football clubs

Mombasa County Government has disbursed KSh 14 million to 155 local football clubs to cater for affiliation and registration fees, marking a major boost for grassroots football and youth empowerment across the county.

The funding is expected to unlock opportunities for hundreds of young players who have long been locked out of structured competitions due to financial constraint.

Speaking during the disbursement, Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir said, “This initiative is part of our broader commitment to invest in youth through sports and ensure that no talent is left behind due to lack of resources. We are building a strong foundation for the future of football in Mombasa.”

County Executive Committee Member for Sports, Youth and Gender Jonathan Wepukhulu noted, “By facilitating affiliation and registration, we are opening doors for our young players to compete, gain exposure, and grow within structured leagues that will shape their careers.”

Acting Chief Officer for Youth Affairs Khamis Kuricha emphasized, “This support will see more teams actively participate in organized competitions, improving discipline, professionalism, and strengthening grassroots club structures across the county.”

Leaders have further insisted that beyond talent development, the initiative must play a critical role in curbing rising cases of drug abuse and the growing gang menace among youth.

They stressed that engaging young people in structured football activities provides a positive outlet, steering them away from crime and harmful behaviors while fostering purpose, discipline, and community belonging.
