Two suspects have been arrested in Nairobi after police recovered suspected stolen motor vehicle parts during an operation aimed at curbing the growing menace of vehicle parts theft in the city.
In a statement, the National Police Service (NPS) said officers from Obama Police Station intercepted a motorcycle carrying two individuals along Kangundo Road.
A search of the motorcycle led to the recovery of suspected stolen vehicle parts, including a Toyota Harrier grille and a Toyota Harrier headlight.
“The suspects were arrested and placed in custody, pending arraignment in court,” the NPS said.
According to the police, the recovered parts were marked with a vehicle registration number, a development expected to aid investigators in identifying the rightful owner and establishing the circumstances surrounding the theft.
“Significantly, the recovered parts were marked with a vehicle registration number, providing investigators with a vital lead in tracing the rightful owner, while also supporting efforts to establish the full circumstances surrounding the theft,” the statement added.
Vehicle parts theft has become increasingly common across Nairobi, with criminals targeting parked vehicles or those caught in traffic.
High-value components such as headlights, grilles, side mirrors and other accessories are often stolen, leaving vehicle owners to incur costly replacement expenses.
The National Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to tackling the crime, noting that operations against vehicle parts theft and other criminal activities will continue.
“The National Police Service remains unwavering in its commitment to combating vehicle parts theft and other forms of criminality,” the agency said.
Police also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities through the nearest police station or the available emergency and anonymous reporting channels.
Authorities believe public cooperation will play a crucial role in dismantling theft networks and recovering stolen property as security agencies intensify enforcement efforts across Nairobi.
