Uproar after 17-year-old boy was shot dead during protests against ebola facility in Nanyuki

The family of 17-year-old Sylvester Muigai is demanding justice after the teenager was allegedly shot dead during Tuesday’s anti-Ebola quarantine facility protests in Likii Village, Nanyuki Town.

Speaking through tears, his mother, Lucy Kagure, questioned why her son was allegedly targeted and shot in the head while taking part in the demonstrations.

Kagure described her son as innocent and peaceful, insisting that he was neither a criminal nor a robber.

The grieving family described Muigai as an obedient and responsible young man. As the first-born in a family of four children, they say he carried the hopes of the entire household.

His mother, a single parent, said she had always believed her son would one day support his younger siblings and help improve the family’s situation.

Muigai was reportedly shot during confrontations that erupted between protesters and police officers on Tuesday June 9, 2026 in Likii Village, as demonstrations against the proposed Ebola quarantine facility entered their second week.

The family has also sent a strong message to President William Ruto, urging the government to halt the project and listen to the concerns of residents.

They argue that too many lives have already been lost in the ongoing protests, despite court orders that temporarily suspended the establishment of the facility.

Meanwhile, the Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU) has called on the Judiciary and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to conduct thorough investigations and ensure justice for all families affected by the protests.

Thirty-one protesters who had been arraigned in court and charged with obstruction of traffic were released from Nanyuki GK Prison on June 11, 2026 after each met the court’s bail requirements.

The controversy surrounding the proposed Ebola quarantine facility continues to intensify.

Meanwhile, the High Court has maintained orders suspending the project’s implementation and directed the government to disclose all agreements, approvals, risk assessments, and operational protocols related to the facility.

Despite the court orders, residents and activists claim activities linked to the project have continued, fueling fresh protests and renewed calls for transparency and public participation.
