Wajir Woman Representative Fatuma Jehow has launched a driving skills sponsorship programme targeting 100 young people in the county, in a move aimed at equipping youth with practical skills and improving their access to employment opportunities.

The Fatuma Jehow Wajir Driving Skills Sponsorship Programme will support selected beneficiaries to undertake professional driving training and obtain their driving licences free of charge upon successful completion.

Jehow said the initiative is designed to prepare Wajir’s youth for the growing employment opportunities emerging from the county’s expanding economy.

“This is more than learning to drive. It is about creating skills, opening doors to employment, and giving our young people a chance to build independent and dignified lives,” said Jehow.

She noted that Wajir is witnessing significant development in its road network, hospitality industry, businesses and construction sector, creating an increasing demand for skilled drivers.

She said the programme would ensure young people are equipped to take advantage of these opportunities.

“Behind every one of these developments is a need for skilled drivers — drivers of private vehicles, trucks, buses, construction machinery and other commercial vehicles. We must prepare our young people today for the jobs of tomorrow,” she said.

One of the beneficiaries, Abdi Ali, welcomed the initiative, saying the sponsorship had given him an opportunity to acquire a professional skill that could improve his chances of securing employment.

“I am grateful for this opportunity because getting driving training and a licence can open many doors for young people like me. I hope to use the skills I gain to secure employment and become self-reliant,” said Abdi Ali.

Jehow said the initiative is part of her efforts to empower young people through skills development, adding that as opportunities continue to emerge across Wajir, the county’s youth must be ready to take them up.
