Women in Tseikuru, Kitui County, have welcomed the ongoing sinking of the Kwa Kasyathyu Earth Dam, saying it will ease the burden of trekking tens of kilometres daily in search of water.
Speaking on Monday, May 25 during the launch of the excavation of the earth dam in Mulangomi Village in Tseikuru Ward, Mwingi North Sub-County, the women said the long journeys had affected their marriages, as they often returned home too exhausted and with little time for their husbands.
They now believe the dam will rekindle love in their families by reducing the time and energy spent fetching water.
With a capacity of between 20,000 and 25,000 cubic metres, the Kwa Kasyathyu Earth Dam is expected to benefit more than 200 households and serve thousands of livestock including 5,000 goats, 3,000 cattle, 1,000 sheep and 300 donkeys.
Kitui County Executive for Agriculture and Livestock Dr. Stephen Mbaya Kimwele said that the earth dam will come in handy, as Mwingi North is one of the leading livestock-producing regions in Kenya, especially in goat rearing.
