The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) has strengthened its foothold in the Mt Kenya region after a delegation of elected leaders from Kirinyaga County announced their decision to join the party during a meeting at Wamunyoro on Thursday, August 6.
DCP Party Leader Rigathi Gachagua announced the defections in a post on his Facebook page, describing the move as further evidence of the party’s growing influence ahead of the 2027 general election.
“The DCP wave continues to wreak havoc and shake Kenya Kwanza to its core,” Gachagua wrote.
He said he had hosted the delegation, led by Kerugoya Ward MCA Eric Muchina, at his Wamunyoro residence, where the leaders formally declared their support for the party.
“This morning at Wamunyoro, I had the privilege of welcoming a delegation of Kirinyaga County leaders led by Hon. Eric Muchina, MCA for Kerugoya Ward. They have announced their decision to join the DCP Party, marking a significant shift in the political landscape,” he said.
The delegation included MCAs Jinaro Njamumo (Mutithi), Peter Karinga (Tebere), Peter Weche (Wamumu), Geoffrey Wadaudi (Kiine), Thomas Mwangi (Mukure), Fredrick Maina (Inoi), Jeremiah Makimi (Kariti), Dr. Isaiah Mbogo (Kabare), James Wambu (Kangai) and nominated MCA Gichangi Bosco.
According to Gachagua, the leaders have also resolved to defend their seats on the DCP ticket in the next general election.
“These leaders have affirmed their intention to seek re-election on the DCP ticket, further fueling the party’s growing momentum on the national stage,” he stated.

The latest defections come as DCP continues to make inroads across the Mt Kenya region. The party has recently attracted several high-profile leaders, including Murang’a governor Irungu Kang’ata and Nyandarua governor Moses Badilisha, signalling shifting political loyalties as parties begin positioning themselves for the 2027 polls.
With the latest additions, DCP is expected to intensify efforts to consolidate its numbers in the Kirinyaga County Assembly as it seeks to expand its influence across the region.
