114 million trees later: PS Omollo underscores why Kenya’s local chiefs leading climate-peace initiative is working

Kenya has showcased the Chiefs’ Climate Action Day Initiative as a practical grassroots model for addressing the link between climate change, peace, and security.

Speaking during the Climate, Peace and Security luncheon at the Germany Ambassador’s residence, Dr. Raymond Omollo, Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, said climate shocks are increasingly driving displacement, resource competition, and local conflict across the region.

The Chiefs’ Initiative anchors Kenya’s National Climate Change Security Response Programme implemented in partnership with the IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre, through three pillars: early warning and intelligence, conflict-sensitive ecological restoration, and capacity building for grassroots governance.

More than 3,400 Chiefs are using the Digitized Support Framework to report real-time localized risk data, while nearly 5,900 administrators have been trained in climate security governance.

Through Chiefs Climate Action Day, communities planted over 7.4 million trees in 2025. Cumulatively, the initiative has supported the planting of more than 114 million trees, with a reported survival rate of 60 percent.

Kenya called on diplomatic, donor, and technical partners to support the scaling of climate peace training and digital reporting systems as part of a wider regional response to climate driven insecurity.
