Africa must shift from raw mineral exports to value addition – Mudavadi

Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, has called on African countries to shift from exporting raw minerals and focus on value addition, local processing and manufacturing that retains greater economic value within the continent.

Mudavadi notes that Africa holds immense untapped mineral wealth, and if strategically harnessed, the sector can become a powerful driver of industrialisation, job creation, infrastructure growth and shared prosperity.

He was speaking during a Ministerial Dinner ahead of the 2nd Kenya Mining Conference and Expo in Nairobi.

Africa’s push for value-driven mining and resource transformation took centre stage during the dinner.

The Prime Cabinet Secretary emphasised the need for African countries to move from intention to action by harmonising regulatory frameworks, strengthening cross-border transport and energy infrastructure, improving investor confidence and speaking with one voice in global negotiations.

Under the theme “Partnerships for Prosperity: Advancing Value-Led Mining in Kenya,” the conference provides an important platform for shaping the future of mining, investment and sustainable resource development in Africa.

He was joined by the Mining and Blue Economy CS Hon Hassan Joho, Hon. Dr. Oladele Henry Alake of Nigeria, Hon. Dahir Shire Mohamed of Somalia, Hon. Losuba Ludoru Wongo of South Sudan, and H.E. Moses Micheal Engadu, Secretary General of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group, among others.
