Deputy Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli has defended the extensive security operation mounted across Nairobi and surrounding areas during the June 25 Gen Z anniversary demonstrations, saying the measures were necessary to keep the public safe and prevent criminal elements from infiltrating the protests.
Speaking in Kangemi on Thursday, Masengeli explained that security officers established checkpoints along major roads as part of efforts to screen vehicles and individuals entering the city.
“We have not blocked anyone from using the roads. We are only blocking those who are attempting to cause violence. We are stopping vehicles to check whether some are carrying weapons and criminals. That is our work,” he said.
The police boss maintained that the operation was not intended to interfere with peaceful protesters but to identify individuals who could pose a threat to public safety.
He noted that officers were under instructions to facilitate lawful demonstrations while ensuring order was maintained.
Masengeli expressed satisfaction with the situation throughout the day, noting that most Kenyans had continued with their normal activities without major interruptions.

“Our wananchi are safe and are going on with their duties as usual. We are glad that there has not been any violence since this morning. We have not seen anybody’s vehicle being burnt, people are going about their work,” he said.
He further assured the public that security agencies remained committed to protecting all citizens regardless of their political views or participation in demonstrations.
“We will ensure the safety of every Kenyan because everybody has a right,” he added.
The heightened deployment saw police officers stationed along key entry and exit routes into Nairobi, including major highways connecting the capital to neighboring counties.
The security operation coincided with nationwide events commemorating the second anniversary of the June 25, 2024 Gen Z protests, with authorities saying the measures were aimed at safeguarding lives, property and critical infrastructure while allowing lawful activities to proceed peacefully.
