The FIFA Council meeting in Vancouver, Canada has officially ratified the dates for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), confirming the tournament will run from June 19 to July 17, 2027.
The announcement, made during a high-level session ahead of the 76th FIFA Congress, locks the “Pamoja” edition into the global football calendar as a historic first for the East African region.
The decision to anchor the event in the mid-year window is a strategic move by football’s world governing body to align AFCON with other major continental championships.
By integrating the tournament into the updated Men’s International Match Calendar, FIFA aims to reduce scheduling conflicts with European clubs, ensuring that Africa’s elite players are available to represent Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania without the usual mid-season club pressures.
The “Pamoja” initiative represents a landmark partnership, marking the first time in the tournament’s history that three nations will share hosting duties.
The co-hosts have secured automatic qualification with the roadmap for the remaining 21 slots already taking shape.
Preliminary rounds concluded in late March, with the main group stage qualifiers scheduled for the September, October, and November 2026 international windows.
Infrastructure preparations are now set to accelerate following this formal endorsement.
In Kenya, the focus remains on the completion of the Talanta Sports City and the overhaul of the Kasarani Stadium.
Uganda is pushing to finalize the Hoima City Stadium and renovate the Mandela National Stadium, while Tanzania prepares its coastal and mainland venues, including the Benjamin Mkapa and Samia Suluhu stadiums.
With the dates now set, CAF inspectors are slated to begin a new round of facility assessments in August.
Beyond the sporting spectacle, the 2027 edition is expected to be a major economic driver for East Africa, boosting tourism and highlighting the region’s capability to deliver a world-class international event.
