How we can reduce petrol prices to KSh187.38 per litre and diesel to KSh189.16 per litre – MP Nyoro

Kiharu Member of Parliament (MP) Ndindi Nyoro has formally notified the National Assembly Clerk of his intention to introduce legislative amendments aimed at bringing down fuel prices.

He argued that the current levels are unacceptable and will cause serious damage to the economy.

In a notice seen by TV47 Digital dated May 15, 2026, MP Nyoro said the rise of Super Petrol to KSh214.25 per litre and Diesel to KSh242.92 per litre is grossly harmful and warned that inflation is expected to rise sharply in the coming months if the government does not change course.

MP Nyoro is proposing two key legislative amendments.

The first is a reduction of the Road Maintenance Levy Fund (RMLF) by KSh7 per litre, reversing an addition made in 2024 and bringing it down from KSh25 to KSh18 per litre.

The second is an amendment to the VAT Act to move petroleum products to the exempt schedule, effectively reducing VAT on fuel from the current 8 per cent to zero.

The Kiharu MP is also calling for an additional KSh5 billion subsidy for diesel, a KSh4 reduction in importer and distributor margins, and the removal of VAT on petroleum products entirely.

He also criticized the government’s approach to fuel pricing, saying the reduction in VAT has done little to lower pump prices because VAT is calculated as a percentage of the landed cost, which has itself escalated.

He further accused the government of playing with fuel prices for political gains, noting that announcing reductions after prices have already been gazette, does not translate to real relief for Kenyans.

“Most price hikes are sticky and therefore may not correspond with any reduction. Case in point is the transport cost. When fares go up, they become sticky, and therefore Kenyans are left paying high prices,” MP Nyoro said.

If all the proposed interventions are implemented, Nyoro projects that Super Petrol would come down to KSh187.38 per litre and Diesel to KSh189.16 per litre, a significant reduction from current prices.

He described the proposed measures as short-term steps to address the effects of high fuel costs, acknowledging that there will need to be a trade-off between short-term revenue losses and the long-term damage that high fuel prices inflict on the broader economy.
