A zebra at Mount Elgon National Park had to be rescued by Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) veterinarians after a discarded slipper became lodged around its leg, cutting into the skin and affecting its movement.
This a reminder that litter is not just an eyesore but a genuine threat to wildlife.
KWS said the team swiftly intervened, safely removed the slipper, and the zebra is now recovering well.
However, the Service noted that such incidents are far more common than most people realise.
“Litter, flip-flops, plastic, rope, and wire, doesn’t just sit around looking messy. Wild animals walk through it, get tangled in it, and it can even become life-threatening if it’s not spotted in time,” KWS said.
It called on members of the public to do their part by picking up litter where possible and disposing of it properly.
“Small actions. Big difference,” the Service added.
