Manchester City edge Burnley to end Arsenal’s 200-day stay on top of table

Manchester City climbed to the top of the Premier League table after edging Burnley 1-0 in a tightly contested clash at Turf Moor.

An early strike from Erling Haaland proved decisive, with the forward netting his 35th goal of the season just five minutes into the encounter.

The victory not only secured maximum points for City but also ended Arsenal’s remarkable 200-day stay at the summit.

City made a blistering start, carrying momentum from their recent win over Arsenal. Within four minutes, a slick attacking move involving Bernardo Silva, Antoine Semenyo and Rayan Cherki nearly produced an opener, but goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka tipped Cherki’s effort onto the crossbar.

Moments later, the breakthrough arrived. Jérémy Doku’s intelligent play unlocked the Burnley defence, setting up Haaland who calmly lifted the ball over Dúbravka to cap a dominant opening spell.

Despite controlling possession, City struggled to extend their lead. Burnley showed flashes of threat, with Quilindschy Hartman denied by a crucial block from Abdukodir Khusanov, while Zian Flemming squandered a promising chance.

After the break, City continued to dictate play but lacked the clinical edge to put the game beyond reach. Haaland came close again, striking the outside of the post, while late opportunities for Cherki and Nico O’Reilly went begging.

In the end, one goal was enough. The result confirms Burnley’s relegation, while City move into pole position in the title race with the season entering its decisive phase.
